Summary
Javid Nama ("The Book of Eternity", 1932) is Muhammad Iqbal's Persian epic of a journey through the heavens, in which Rumi guides the poet, as Virgil guides Dante, through the spheres of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn and on beyond them to the presence of God. On the way he meets poets, mystics, prophets and rulers, among them Jamaluddin Afghani, al-Hallaj, Ghalib, Nietzsche and Tipu Sultan. It is addressed to his son Javid and closes with a message to the young. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
