In the winter of 1863 the young insurgent Józef Odrowąż, wounded in the January Uprising, is hidden in a ruined manor on the Vistula by Salomea Brynicka, a lady who has her own secrets. Żeromski's short, lyrical novel tells of their love and of the uprising's defeat.
