On the field of Kurukshetra the warrior Arjuna loses heart at the sight of his kinsmen in the opposing army, and his charioteer Krishna reveals himself as God and teaches him the paths of action, devotion and knowledge. Sir Edwin Arnold's 1885 verse translation was long the way English readers met the Gita.
