In the tenth year of the siege of Troy, Achilles quarrels with Agamemnon and withdraws from the fighting, and the Greeks are driven back to their ships until the death of his friend Patroclus brings him back to kill Hector. Pope's heroic couplets, published between 1715 and 1720, made this the English Iliad for a century.
