Deputy Nazir Ahmad's novel of 1885 follows Mubtila, a young Delhi man whose wish for a second wife and a freer life brings ruin on his household. Written as a warning against polygamy and idleness, it tells the story of one family over fifty-four short chapters, in plain Urdu and with a good deal of domestic detail.
