Elsa
By Teuvo Pakkala
Elsa grows up in a poor family on the edge of a northern town, where winter means hunger and her mother puts her faith in God and luck. With her friend Mari she lives on borrowed romances and dreams of the love they promise, until her own life begins to test those dreams. Pakkala's novel is a realist portrait of poverty and girlhood.
