Surendranath, a gentle and careless young man with nobody to look after him, comes to live in a village household, and the 'elder sister' of the title, Madhabi, takes charge of him. Sarat Chandra's long story, one of the first of his to be printed, in 1913, is a quiet account of the care two people take of each other and of what the house makes of it.
