Walter Scott
1771–1832
Biography
Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (1771–1832), worked in Edinburgh as an advocate and legal official while writing novels, poems and history from Scotland. He combined his legal duties with an active role in learned bodies, and in 1820 he was made a baronet of Abbotsford.
His Waverley novels, published between 1814 and 1831, made him one of the most widely read writers in Europe for most of a century. He also wrote the narrative poems Marmion and The Lady of the Lake, and his use of history in fiction helped establish the historical novel as a form that shaped European Romanticism.
Ivanhoe, which is listed on this site under the titles Ivanhoe and Ivanhoe: A Romance, is set in twelfth-century England and follows a story of Saxons and Normans. Some of his editions here are credited to translators, Gaetano Barbieri and M. P. Lindo among them.
