نظیر اکبرآبادی

c. 1735–1830

Biography

Nazir Akbarabadi lived most of his long life in Agra, which was then called Akbarabad, and earned his living as a teacher. His dates are not settled; he is usually said to have been born around 1735 and to have died in 1830.

He wrote in the speech of the street and the market, and took his subjects from the people around him: the seasons, the festivals of Holi, Diwali and Eid, the vendor, the poor man, the child. Poems such as Banjara Nama and Admi Nama are among the best known. The learned taste of his own day gave little notice to such poetry, and his standing as one of the most original Urdu poets of his century was recognised much later.

The book on this site, انتخابِ نظیر اکبرآبادی, is not his complete work. It gathers the poems that volunteers have so far typed on Urdu Wikisource.
