میر تقی میر
1723–1810
Biography
Mir Taqi Mir, known simply as Mir, is counted among the greatest poets of Urdu. He was born in Agra in 1723 and made his name in Delhi, but as the old capital declined he left it in 1782 for Lucknow, where he lived under the patronage of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula and died in 1810.
His fame rests on the six diwans of his ghazals, which are known for plain, speaking language and a mood of grief and wounded feeling. He also wrote masnavis, marsiyas, qasidas and rubais, a Persian autobiography, Zikr-e-Mir, and a Persian account of the poets of his time, Nikat-ush-Shu'ara.
The book on this site, انتخابِ کلامِ میر, is not his complete work. It gathers the poems that volunteers have so far typed on Urdu Wikisource.
