داغ دہلوی
1831–1905
Biography
Dagh Dehlvi, born Nawab Mirza Khan in Delhi in 1831, was one of the best-loved Urdu poets of the later nineteenth century. He studied the art of verse under Zauq, left Delhi after the events of 1857 for the court of Rampur, and from 1888 lived at Hyderabad as poetry teacher to the Nizam, where he died in 1905.
His ghazals are known for an easy, fluent Urdu in the idiom of Delhi, for wit and for a lightness in speaking of love. He had a great many pupils, and young poets in distant places, Iqbal among them in his early years, sent him their verses for correction.
The book on this site, انتخابِ کلامِ داغ, is not his complete work. It gathers the poems that volunteers have so far typed on Urdu Wikisource.
