Edgar Rice Burroughs
1875–1950
Biography
Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American writer of adventure, science fiction and fantasy, born in Chicago in 1875. He tried a run of ordinary jobs and was past thirty before he turned to fiction. His stories first appeared in the popular magazines of the day, and book publishers later gathered them into the novels that made him famous.
His two most famous creations are Tarzan, the son of an English lord who is raised by apes in an African jungle, and John Carter, a Virginian who is carried to Mars and becomes a warrior there. Burroughs wrote many books about each, and he also invented a hollow-earth world called Pellucidar and a series set on Venus. Tarzan went on to become a comic strip, a long run of films and a large line of merchandise. The ranch Burroughs owned in California is the origin of Tarzana, a Los Angeles neighbourhood whose name comes from Tarzan.
Burroughs openly backed eugenics and the pseudo-scientific racial ideas of his time, and those views show in his fiction, Tarzan included, so readers should keep them in mind. The library holds three of his novels: A Princess of Mars, the first book of his Mars series; Tarzan of the Apes, which opens the Tarzan series; and The Chessmen of Mars, a later novel in the Mars series.
