Cheng Weiyuan

Biography
Cheng Weiyuan (程偉元), styled Xiaoquan (小泉), was a writer and editor from Suzhou. He was born around 1745 and died in 1818 in Liaodong, in the north-east, where he had settled in his later years. One Chinese source describes him as a descendant of the Song philosopher Cheng Yi. In the late Qianlong years he lived in Beijing, and between 1800 and 1802 he worked as an adviser to the military governor of Shengjing (Mukden), for whom he also compiled a collection of poems.
His lasting place in literature comes from Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢). Cao Xueqin's novel circulated in handwritten copies for decades after the author's death in the early 1760s, and it was not printed until 1791. That year Cheng worked with the scholar Gao E to gather and edit the manuscripts into a complete version of 120 chapters, adding forty chapters to the eighty that had been in circulation. A second printing followed in 1792. Scholars still debate how the added chapters came to be written, but the printed text that Cheng and Gao produced became the most widely read version of the novel.
The site credits the novel under his name, because the text most readers know comes from the 1791 edition he prepared with Gao E. His own writing is not well documented, so the biography rests on a few sources and should be checked against the links below. His story shows how a novel that had circulated only in manuscript reached print, and how much of its final form depended on the editors who prepared it.
