Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin
1826–1889
Biography
Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826–1889) was born in the Tver region into a family of landowners. He spent most of his working life as a government official and served as vice-governor in Ryazan and in Tver before he became a full-time writer. He published under the pen name Nikolai Shchedrin, a name that became so closely attached to him that his books are usually credited to Saltykov-Shchedrin. He is among the greatest Russian satirists of the nineteenth century, a critic of serfdom, bureaucratic cruelty and the moral failings of the propertied classes.
His sketches and stories combine harsh realism with grotesque, fantastic satire. After the death of the poet Nikolai Nekrasov he edited the magazine Otechestvennye Zapiski, until the government closed it in 1884. The History of a Town (История одного города, 1870) is a satirical chronicle of an invented provincial town, Glupov, whose succession of governors and mayors shows the absurdity of autocracy. The Golovlyov Family (Господа Головлевы, 1880) follows a landowning household and centres on Porfiry, a hypocrite who uses an endless flow of words to wear down and destroy the people around him.
Both books are on this site under their Russian titles, with the English titles The History of a Town and The Golovlyov Family. Each shows the satirist's method: a dry, deadpan voice that makes officials, landowners and whole families look absurd, and a grim understanding of how cruelty and self-deception spread through ordinary life.
