Tulis Sutan Sati
1898–1942
Biography
Tulis Sutan Sati was an Indonesian writer of the group known as the Balai Pustaka generation. That name comes from the publishing house the Dutch colonial administration had set up to print reading matter in Malay for the local population. He was born in 1898 in Fort de Kock, the colonial name for Bukittinggi in West Sumatra, and he died in 1942. Indonesian sources also give his name in the older spelling Toelis Soetan Sati.
He spent much of his working life at Balai Pustaka, where he joined as an assistant proofreader in 1920 and by 1940 held a senior post. His output includes novels and short stories, along with poems, adaptations of regional tales and translations. His best-known novel, Sengsara Membawa Nikmat, is still read in Indonesian schools and was once broadcast on the national television service TVRI, which helped make his name known well beyond West Sumatra.
The site holds Memutuskan Pertalian, one of his novels, so readers can see the Balai Pustaka style of the period for themselves. His books are often read as a picture of Minangkabau life in the early twentieth century, written by an author who grew up in it, and they carry the moral lessons and love of homeland that were typical of his generation.
