Penelope Stephanou Delta
1874–1941
Biography
Penelope Stephanou Delta (1874–1941) was a Greek writer, best known for her historical novels and for her children's literature. She was born Penelope Benaki in Alexandria, Egypt, the daughter of a wealthy cotton merchant, and she married the entrepreneur Stephanos Deltas. The couple lived in Alexandria and in Frankfurt before settling in Athens in 1916. Through her long association with the politician and writer Ion Dragoumis, she was drawn into the centre of early twentieth-century Greek politics, including the struggle over Macedonia and the national split that followed it.
Her first novel, Gia tēn Patrida (For the Sake of the Fatherland, 1909), is set in the Byzantine era, and her second, Ton Kairo tou Voulgaroktonou (In the Years of the Bulgar-Slayer), follows the reign of Basil II. Paramythi Hōris Onoma (A Tale with No Name, 1911) was inspired by the military uprising at Goudi in 1909. Her later novels include Trellantōnēs (1932), about her elder brother's childhood in Alexandria, and Ta Mystika tou Valtou (1937), set during the Macedonian struggle. Her long trilogy Rōmiopoules (Young Greek Girls), written from 1927 and completed in 1939, is a thinly veiled account of her own youth in Athens. Her historical novels have shaped how many Greeks picture their national past.
The site holds Παραμύθι χωρίς όνομα (A Tale Without a Name), her 1911 novel inspired by the Goudi military uprising of 1909. It is one of her early novels to take a recent political event as its subject, and it shows why her name is tied to the political history of modern Greece as well as to her books for children.
