Marika Stiernstedt

1875–1954

Biography

Marika Stiernstedt, whose full name was Maria Sofia Alexandra Stiernstedt, was a Swedish author and artist. She was born in Stockholm in 1875 into an aristocratic family, her father a baron and her mother a Polish countess, yet she held socialist views and remained a Catholic all her life. She died in 1954 at Finja, in the Skåne region of southern Sweden.

She began publishing in the early 1890s. Her first short story appeared in 1892 and her first novel, Sven Vingedal, in 1894, both under the pseudonym Mark Stern. She was married twice. Her first husband was the aviator Carl Cederström, and that marriage ended in 1906. From 1909 to 1936 she was married to the writer Ludvig Nordström, a marriage that drew great interest from her contemporaries and became the subject of the book Kring ett äktenskap. Much of her writing praised middle-class women who could get a proper education and make something of their lives.

The site holds Fröken Liwin, a novel published in 1925 that is among her most valued books. It follows a difficult relationship between a mother and a daughter and the problems of ageing alone, and it shows Stiernstedt's interest in the private lives of women under social pressure. It is a good way into her work for readers who know her name but not her books.
