Biography

Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho (1847–1921) was a Portuguese writer and poet. She was the first woman to be admitted to the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, an honour that few women of her time received. Her output was in verse and prose.

Contos e Fantasias, whose title means 'Tales and Fantasies', is the book on this site credited to her. It is a collection of short stories, a form in which she wrote alongside her poetry, and it is one of the ways her work can still be read today.
