Frans Hedberg

1828–1908

Biography

Frans Theodor Hedberg was a Swedish playwright, poet and actor who was born in Stockholm in 1828 and died there in 1908. He also wrote under the pen names Esbern Snare, Palle Block and Paul Qvitt. In 1857 he married the actress Amanda Broman, which tied his family life closely to the Stockholm theatre.

Hedberg's working life was bound up with the theatre of nineteenth-century Stockholm, where he acted and wrote plays. Drama was central to what he did, but he also wrote poetry and prose, and his use of several pen names shows how a writer of his time moved between forms and audiences.

The book on this site is Kloka Maja och andra berättelser, a collection of tales. The collection takes its title from the tale “Kloka Maja”, and it gives readers a view of Hedberg's storytelling beyond the stage. Those who know him as a playwright and poet will find in these stories a different side of his writing.
