Domingos Olímpio

1851–1906

Biography

Domingos Olímpio Braga Cavalcanti was a Brazilian novelist, journalist, lawyer, diplomat and member of parliament. He was born at Sobral, in the northeastern state of Ceará, on 18 September 1851, and died in Rio de Janeiro on 7 October 1906. He worked as a journalist in Rio and conceived and edited Os Anais, a weekly that drew contributions from many Brazilian and Portuguese writers.

He is remembered above all for Luzia-Homem, a naturalist novel that first appeared in serial form in 1903 in the Rio newspaper O Comércio. It was reprinted many times, in cheap popular editions and in lavish illustrated ones, and a 1987 film directed by Fábio Barreto was loosely inspired by it.

The site holds Luzia-Homem, the novel for which he is best known, so it is the natural place to start with his work. Readers who come to it will find the book that has kept his name in print.
