Cornelis Johannes Kieviet
1858–1931
Biography
Cornelis Johannes Kieviet was a Dutch teacher who wrote books for children. He was born in Hoofddorp, in the province of North Holland, in 1858, and he died in 1931.
He is remembered above all for his stories about a boy called Dik Trom. The stories ran to several books, and Hoofddorp still honours the character with a statue of him sitting backwards on a donkey in the town's main square, a sign of how well the boy is remembered there.
The book on this site, Uit het leven van Dik Trom (roughly, From the life of Dik Trom), is one of these stories and a place to begin with his work in Dutch. The Dik Trom books are the reason his name is still known, and they show how a children's writer of his time could make one ordinary boy the centre of a whole series.
