Claudi Planas i Font

1869–1931

Biography

Claudi Planas i Font was a Catalan lawyer and writer, born in Barcelona in 1869. He built his career in the city’s municipal administration, where for many years he served as secretary of the Barcelona City Council. That post carried him through very different political regimes: the constitutional monarchy of Alfonso XIII, the dictatorship of General Primo de Rivera, and the first months of the Second Spanish Republic. He died in 1931.

He wrote as well as worked in the administration. His books include Entre muntanyes (1894), Prosa (1903) and En Pere i altres contes (1919), and he contributed to Catalan newspapers such as La Renaixensa and La Veu de Catalunya. He took an active part in Catalanism, the movement for Catalan identity and language. He joined the Centre Escolar Catalanista, was chosen as a delegate of the Unió Catalanista to the assemblies held at Manresa in 1892, Reus in 1893 and Balaguer in 1894, and joined the first International Congress of the Catalan Language in 1906.

The site holds his book En Pere i altres contes (1919), a collection of stories written in Catalan. It is a sample of the prose of a lawyer and civil servant who took part in the cultural revival of his language at the turn of the twentieth century.
