Avancinio Avancini

1866–1939

Biography

Avancinio Avancini (1866–1939) was an Italian writer and journalist. He was born in Pavia, in Lombardy, but his family came from Trentino, and he lived and worked in Milan for most of his life. He was a firm supporter of irredentism, the movement that wanted the Italian-speaking lands still ruled by Austria, Trentino among them, to join Italy.

As a journalist he wrote commentary and essays, and as a novelist he worked in a realist manner with a plain, unadorned style. His published works include a literary history of Italy from 1800 to recent times, printed in Milan in 1933, and Va pensiero, a historical novel about the irredentists, which came out in 1938.

The site holds Novelle lombarde (Lombard stories). Its title places the stories in the region where he was born and spent most of his working life, and the book gives a reader a way into his short fiction, written in the realist style of his time.
