Anne Brontë
1820–1849
Biography
Anne Brontë lived from 1820 to 1849. She was the youngest of the six children of Patrick Brontë, an Irish-born clergyman, and his wife Maria. Her mother died when Anne was a year old, and her two eldest sisters died while she was still a child. She spent most of her life in Haworth, Yorkshire, where her father was the parish clergyman. Between 1839 and 1845 she worked as a governess for several families, and she drew on that demanding experience in her writing.
Anne's first appearance in print came in 1846, when a joint collection of poems by the three Brontë sisters appeared under the pen names Acton, Currer and Ellis Bell. Her first novel, Agnes Grey, appeared in 1847 in a three-volume set alongside Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall followed in 1848. She died in 1849, aged twenty-nine, most likely of tuberculosis. After her death Charlotte blocked the reprinting of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which she considered a mistake, and that decision damaged Anne's reputation for many years. Both of Anne's novels are now counted among the classics of English fiction.
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the book on this site. A young woman, Helen Graham, leaves a husband who drinks, deceives and mistreats her. She moves with her son to an old house called Wildfell Hall and lives there under an assumed name. A neighbour, Gilbert Markham, becomes curious about her, and much of the story comes through her own diary. The novel deals openly with drink, cruelty and the limited rights of a wife, which is why it is often called one of the first feminist novels in English.
