Kenji Miyazawa
1896–1933
Biography
Kenji Miyazawa (宮沢賢治) was a Japanese poet, children's writer and teacher, born in 1896 in Hanamaki in Iwate Prefecture in the north of Japan. He taught agricultural science, worked as a farming adviser and devoted much of his short life to the farmers of his home region. A devout follower of the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren Buddhism, he imagined an ideal land called Ihatov, modelled on Iwate, which appears throughout his writing. He died of pneumonia in 1933, at the age of thirty-seven.
He was almost unknown as a poet during his lifetime. After his death, friends such as the poet Kusano Shimpei worked to publish and promote his poems and stories, and his reputation grew until he became one of the best-loved writers in modern Japan. His most famous work is Night on the Galactic Railroad (銀河鉄道の夜), in which two boys ride a train across the stars. The story was left unfinished at his death and has since been adapted into anime, and his tanka and free verse are still read widely in many languages.
Two of his books are on this site under their Japanese titles. Chumon no Ooi Ryoriten (注文の多い料理店, The Restaurant of Many Orders) is his first book of stories, published in 1924, in which two hunters wander into a mountain restaurant whose instructions grow more and more menacing. Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru (銀河鉄道の夜) is the unfinished story of the boy Giovanni and his friend Campanella on their journey through the Milky Way. Together they show his gift for fable, strangeness and tenderness toward the natural world.
