Abdul Halim Sharar

Biography
Abdul Halim Sharar (1860–1926) was an Urdu novelist, essayist and historian with deep roots in Lucknow, where he was born in 1860. At the age of nine he went with his mother to Calcutta, where his father served the court of the exiled Nawab Wajid Ali Shah at Matiya Burj. He was educated at home in Arabic and Persian, and began his writing career as a newspaper correspondent before joining the staff of the Lucknow weekly Oudh Punch. In 1887 he founded the magazine Dilgudaz, which kept appearing until 1926, the year he died.
He wrote more than a hundred books. He is best remembered for his historical novels, which drew on episodes from the Islamic past and celebrated courage, loyalty and religious devotion. Titles from this line include Malik ul Aziz Varjina, Hasan Angelina and Mansur Mohana, and Firdaus-e-Bareen, first published in 1899. His history of his native city, Guzishta Lucknow, is often praised as one of the best accounts of how Lucknow took shape and of its culture. He helped make the historical novel a popular form in Urdu and reached a wide readership.
Two of his works are on this site. فردوس بریں (Firdaus-e-Bareen) is among his best-known novels. شرر کے سفرنامے (Sharar ke Safarnamay) gathers his travel writing, which shows him writing about places beyond Lucknow, alongside his fiction and history.
