A. L. G. Bosboom-Toussaint

1812–1886

Biography

Anna Louisa Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint (1812–1886) was a Dutch novelist. She was born in Alkmaar and spent much of her life in The Hague, where she died in 1886. She wrote mainly historical novels and novellas, and from about 1840 until her death she was the leading figure in Dutch historical fiction, with a steady readership across several decades. Her best-known works include Het Huis Lauernesse (1840) and Majoor Frans (1875), a novel of her own day.

She is credited with introducing lifelike, psychologically complicated characters into the Dutch novel. Her historical books place their people against the background of earlier periods of the Netherlands, so that public events and private dramas unfold together. Her name is often given in initials, and the form A. L. G. Bosboom-Toussaint is the one used for this page.

Her book Frits Millioen en zijne vrienden (Frits Millioen and His Friends) is listed on this site under her name. It is a further example of her Dutch prose alongside the historical novels for which she is best known, and it gives readers a way to test for themselves the reputation she earned for vivid characters.
