Maria Rodziewiczówna
1863–1944
Biography
Maria Rodziewiczówna was a Polish writer who lived from 1863 until 1944 and died near the village of Żelazna. Between the two world wars she was among the most widely read authors in Poland. Her fiction keeps returning to the countryside, to country households and to the peasants who worked the land, and she wrote about them with warmth and respect.
Patriotism runs through much of her work, and she also spoke for women's rights, a cause that drew her into public debate as well as into her books. Her titles include Wrzos (Heather), Dewajtis, Lato leśnych ludzi (Summer of the Forest People) and Straszny dziadunio (Eerie Grandpa). Her books are rooted in particular places, such as the estate, the village and the forest.
Two of her novels are on this site. Dewajtis, first published in 1889, is set in the Samogitian countryside and follows a young man who takes charge of a neglected estate. Lato leśnych ludzi, published in 1920, follows a company of people who settle in the forest through the seasons of one year. Both fit her preoccupation with the land and with people who live close to it, and both show why she was so widely read in her own day.
