Joel Lehtonen
1881–1934
Biography
Joel Lehtonen was a Finnish novelist, critic, translator and journalist. He was born in 1881 in Sääminki, a village now part of the town of Savonlinna in eastern Finland, and died in 1934 in the Haaga district of Helsinki. His childhood was poor and without a father, and his schooling depended on help from a foster mother. He studied literature at the University of Helsinki for a few years but did not take a degree. He began as a neo-Romantic writer, and after the Finnish Civil War of 1918 his work took on a darker, disillusioned tone.
His best-known novel is Putkinotko, published in volumes between 1919 and 1920. In 1905 Lehtonen had bought a farm in his home district of Sääminki, and that place became the Putkinotko of his books. His half-brother's family lived in one half of the house while Lehtonen used the other. The novel is a portrait of an idle drunkard and a foolish gentleman. Finnish critics rank it, next to Volter Kilpi's Alastalon salissa, as one of the two great one-day novels of Finnish literature, and it stands out most in his output.
Two of his books are on this site: Putkinotko and Lintukoto. In 1924 Lehtonen acquired a fishing lodge on a small island in Lake Vanajavesi, near Sääksmäki. The lodge was called Lintukoto, meaning bird's home. The book Lintukoto, published in 1929, takes its name from that place and consists of pages from his diary.
