Jacobus Jan Cremer
1827–1880
Biography
Jacobus Jan Cremer was born in Arnhem and died in The Hague in 1880. English references call him Jacob Jan Cremer, and he also wrote under the name J. J. Cremer. He began as a painter of Gelderland landscapes, but before his marriage in 1852 he had already started writing novels and stories, and it soon became clear that writing drew him more than painting did. Accounts differ on his year of birth: the Dutch encyclopaedia gives 1827 and the English article gives 1837. The dates here follow the Dutch one.
His reputation rests on the Betuwsche novellen, short stories of the 1850s written in the dialect of the Betuwe, the river country between the Rhine and the Waal in Gelderland. Set in and around the village of Driel, where he had spent his childhood summers, they became bestsellers and were translated into German and French. His later novels, such as Anna Rooze (1867), Dokter Helmond en zijn vrouw (1870) and Daniël Sils, moved away from the dialect and set their stories in the wider Dutch towns, especially The Hague. He also wrote plays and a volume of poems, which did less for his reputation. A 1911 encyclopaedia called him the Dutch Fritz Reuter, for the humour of his dialect readings.
Two of his books are on this site: Betuwsche novellen, published together with Een reisgezelschap, and De lelie van 's-Gravenhage. The first is the Betuwe collection that made his name, and its stories carry the humour and village life he had known as a boy. The second is an early historical novel, which the Dutch encyclopaedia calls an unsuccessful effort. He should not be confused with the later Dutch writer Jan Cremer (1940–2024), author of the 1964 scandal novel Ik, Jan Cremer, who is a different person.
