He published 23 books in all, thirteen of them novels, and he also wrote stories, biographies and history. His early schooling was at home, and he gained a working knowledge of several languages, among them Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi and English. His best-known work is the novel Adarsh Hindu, which the Hindi article calls the first trikatha, or three-part story, in Hindi.
