Kenneth Grahame
1859–1932
Biography
Kenneth Grahame (1859–1932) was a Scottish writer whose name rests on one children's classic, though most of his working life was spent in London at the Bank of England. He was born in Scotland. After his mother died and his father was unable to look after the children, he spent much of his childhood with his grandmother in England. He attended St Edward's School in Oxford. His ambition of going on to university was thwarted, so he joined the Bank instead, where he built a successful career.
Before his best-known book he published three collections of essays and sketches: Pagan Papers (1893), The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898). The last two look back at childhood with a fine eye for small things, and they show qualities that would later mark his writing for children.
The Wind in the Willows, published in 1908, follows the Mole, the Water Rat, the Badger and the boastful Mr Toad through the seasons along a river and into the Wild Wood. Its mix of adventure, friendship and quiet love of home has kept it in print for more than a century, and it has been adapted for stage and screen many times.
On this site you can read The Wind in the Willows, the book on which his place in English children's literature rests. It can be enjoyed as a plain adventure, or as a portrait of friendship and home that adults value as much as children do.
